El Ciclo de Las Guacamayas

El Ciclo de Las Guacamayas, 2015, Acrylic and oil on canvas, 18" x 24"

The work considers the endangerment of guacamayas, or macaws, due to deforestation, poaching, and the illegal pet trade, and the work that’s being done to protect them. During a 2015 residency in Peru, my studio was a bedroom with no windows and a permanent view of la selva, the jungle, where endangered macaws would walk into my room requesting snacks. Encircled by an impasto above-ground tree root, the painting illustrates an endless flight of the red macaw, speaking of the cycles of life that occur in the Amazon rainforest.

Tomate

Tomate, 2020, Acrylic and dyed corn husks on canvas, 12" x 12"

I am delighted by the amount of people who are finding home in their continued or newborn interest in plants. This painting is dedicated to those who are feeling a need to instinctively put their hands in the dirt in times of struggle, to embrace plant medicine, and to know where their food comes from. Nuestra Madre Tierra sees us, welcomes us, and acknowledges our actions and our growth as we reclaim this knowledge with compassion for our planet.

Suzy González is an artist, curator, and zinester based in San Antonio, TX. She co-publishes Yes, Ma’am zine, co-organizes the San Anto Zine Fest, and is half of the collective Dos Mestizx. Suzy holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BFA from Texas State University.

Through Xicanx veganism, I find interest in the decolonization of one’s diet, or a desire to reclaim the pre-colonial plant-based nourishment of my ancestors. My artwork serves as a platform for working through my intersections and for striving for intercultural conversations. This, I hope, will open doors to compassion and healing.
